Hemiplegia is a condition paralyzing or weakening one side of a client’s body. This condition can be the result of illness, stroke, or spinal cord injury. Affected individuals will usually need adaptive technology to aid in efficient ambulation and the performance of household tasks. Patients may experience sensory loss, stiffness, spasms, weakness, and/or paralysis only in one arm and its corresponding leg. If the injury is incomplete, the resulting condition is termed “hemiparesis.” (Click here for more information on the distinction between complete and incomplete injuries.)
